Lunch Time Live Gig 1st December 2010

Last Wednesday 1st December, myself and Niall managed a lunch time gig in one of the canteens of the college.Paddy was playing at the gig so we hooked up the day before the event. I got to ask him and decide upon what gear we would need. He informed me that it was going to be a two piece semi accoustic guitar set up.

Here is a list of the gear we needed to have in place:

  • 2 x Powered Monitors
  • 2 x Monitor Stands
  • 2 x Mic Stands
  • 2 x Mics (Mic Type's to Follow)
  • 2 x DI Boxes
  • 2 x Kettle Leads
  • 7 x XLR Mic Leads (1 Spare)
  • 2 x Jack to Jack Leads
  • 1 x Headphones
  • 2 x Extention Lead's
We arrived into the canteen to get the stage up we got everything in place and ready for a sound check. While  doing the sound check there was a buzzing noise coming from Paddy's guitar. I then changed the XLR lead going from the DI box to the channel on the mixer. This helped reduce the buzzing.

We then did some EQing to maximize the quality of the sound.  After some different adjustments with the treble & the bass on the different channels we got a quality clear sound that we were happy with. We then proceeded to add some reverb through the AUX sends. The reverb was then ad justed throughout the gig and was changed to suit each track.

The 2 piece band then performed a few tracks, using two acoustic guitars and two Mic's,  followed by Paddy who done a solo performance on the guitar while singing. After Paddy finished we had two more guest performers who came up from the audience. They needed just one acoustic guitar and two Mic's. The solo singer proved to have a strong voice and this was a challenging experience to monitor the levels of his voice.

  1. Interim feedback: Lots of detail in this account-it is very readable and the inclusion of pictures and videos present a very clear account of the event.

The following things are missing so make sure that you include them in the next write up:

    - channel listing (use the document posted on moodle called 'live sound session planning')
    - stage plan (simple diagram of signal flow which you could put together in paint or publisher)
-health & safety (you have not refered to health and safety in your report and I can see from the pcs and videos that there were cable runs all over the place)
-evaluate your own skills-what did you learn from the experience. You have alluded to what you learned when you spoke about the buzzing DI and the monitoring of the strong voice but you need to be clearer

I suggest that you use subheadings as a way of structuring your blog e.g.

    1. Channel listing
embed document (perhaps as a picture so that we don't have to navigate away from the page)

    2. Stage plan
    Embed diagram

    3. Health & safety
Discuss challenges with regard to health & safety in the venue - how did you address these? what measure did you put in place to make sure the set up was free of hazards?

    4. Evaluate the equipment
Discuss why you choice specific desk, speakers, mics according to their specifications. Did the equipment perform as you expected?

    5. Evaluate the experience
What did you learn from the experience, did you use any new equipment? Did you operate sound for instruments that you had not done previously? How can you improve?
